The Area

The Quantocks which are in Somerset are known locally as the "hidden jewel of England" and whether you are looking to rest and recharge tired batteries, or as a base to explore the numerous visitor attractions which you would expect from a holiday area steeped in ancient history such as this, Greenway, a luxury self-catering dog friendly cottage is the perfect base for you.

For those who like to walk, ride or MTB, the 9,500 acres of Quantock Hills are quite literally at the end of your garden. They are steeped in history, myth and legend and are staggeringly beautiful. With a mix of open moorland and deep stream laced wooded coombes, wildlife is in abundance. Deer, sheep and wild ponies roam freely while high in the mackerel skies birds of prey fly on the shimmering thermals. Please explore the area using the drop down boxes below.

The Quantock Hills AONB and SSI are a mix of stunning open moorland and deep stream laced wooded coombes where wildlife is in abundance. The sheer beauty of this area inspired two of our greatest poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge who wrote the Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Kahn while living in the area and William Wordsworth who also lived just down the lane, wrote amongst other works, Tintern Abbey.

Eating and drinking is a very important part of Somerset life. The yummy fresh local produce can be found at all of the numerous farm shops, where the owners take great pride in their 'farm to plate' air and road miles; or one should say lack of. The very best cream teas can be found in the local village of Kilve, at the Old Chantry tea rooms. Set within the ruins of this ancient monastery surrounded by clouds of old English roses, freshly baked scones and clotted cream, life doesn’t get much better.

Gorgeous village pubs await you after those long bracing walks. They ooze with charm and feel of ‘yesteryear,’ with friendly Landlords and colorful locals, proper local beers, rich nourishing food and open fires, you will be wishing you had a magic carpet to whip you back to Greenway your luxury dog friendly cottage (particularly if you have partaken of the local cider!)

Kilve Beach is just one and half miles and is world famous for its unique lias and rhaetic rock formations which yield many fossils, especially ammonites. Limestone occurs in bands which readily break into rectangular blocks. These have been widely used for building in the nearby villages.

Watchet, Blue Anchor, Dunster and Minehead Beaches are a mixture of sand and stone, and at low tide there are good expanses of sand and are therefore ideal for building huge sand castles and or running dogs and children. The nearest surfing beach is Woolacombe which is just 45 minutes away.

Whilst you contemplate all of the things you should be doing like site seeing how about just relaxing in your garden. Climb into the 6ft never-to-be-got-out-of bean bags (recommended that bottle of wine accompanies this maneuver!) and soak up those rays in your south facing garden. Jump in the hot tub and let the powerful hydrotherapy jets work their magic, or stretch out in the hammock and doze to the gentle background music courtesy of the local bird life.

If the weather is inclement this is a lovely excuse to light the wood burner, stay in the PJ's and snuggle down in the deep leather sofas and catch up on a bit of reading and that much needed rest.

Besides the proximity of the coast and the moor, Somerset has so many things to keep all the family amused. The fascinating Wookey Holes and Cheddar Gorge provide for excellent fun filled days. Tropiquaria is fantastic petting zoo, ideal for the small members of the family. Visit Seaquarium at Weston-super-Mare, or see the Exmoor Falconry display at Porlock.

For the boys spend a day at the Fleet Air Arm Museum or take a ride on the wonderful West Somerset Steam Train, where even doggie family members are most welcome. For the girls, maybe go horse riding or visit the Dunster Museum and Doll Collection - there are just so many things to do, you will need to spend at least a month here just to scratch the surface.

Clarkes Village is only a 40 minute drive, and is a very dangerous place to visit (well for the wallet anyway!) there are just too many lovely shops here and a whole day can be spent getting from one end of the place to the other.

Bristol and Bath are also within easy striking distance for the addicted shopper and both are well worth a visit in their own rights and not just for the shopping.

Taunton town centre is a lovely place to visit and shop. It has wonderful old cobbled streets, lots of little specialist shops and cafe's and a very pretty park and old church. Minehead also has some very lovely shops.
